Parent Carers - are you planning for the future?

Do you care for a young adult with learning disabilities?

At our recent Parent Carers Peer Support Group, we talked about something that many of us find difficult to face – planning for the future. It’s a topic that can feel overwhelming and even a little scary, but it’s also one of the most important steps we can take to make sure our loved ones are supported in the years ahead.

We often focus so much on the day-to-day that thinking long-term gets pushed aside, but future planning can give peace of mind and help avoid stress later.

Some of the areas we discussed include:

  • Applying for a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) or Deputyship – so you can continue to make decisions if your young adult cannot.

  • Writing a Will – ensuring your wishes are clear and legally protected.

  • Setting up a Trust – safeguarding financial security for your loved one.

Starting the new year with these steps can feel daunting, but you’re not alone. There are excellent resources and professionals who can guide you through the process.

If you’re ready to explore future planning, check out the free online information sessions from Renaissance Legal. These events are designed for Carers of disabled and vulnerable people and cover practical advice on Wills, Trusts, LPAs, and more.

Taking action today can make a huge difference tomorrow.
