The rising cost of living is not only driving up our daily expenses, but we're also constantly exposed to advertisements (often algorithmically tailored to our preferences and interests). With the ease of making payments through a quick phone tap or a simple button click, it's alarmingly easy to overspend and find ourselves perpetually in debt through overdrafts, loans, and credit purchases.
But money worries can result in huge amounts of stress.
If you are struggling with debt or money worries, it can be helpful to focus on what you can control, such as your routine, for example exercise, eating well and sleep. These activities are part of self-care which is an important way to manage stress. Try adding a breathing, meditation, or relaxation exercise into your routine: The Insight Timer or Oxford Mindfulness apps have some free exercises.
If you overspend, keep a journal to note down the trigger for overspending, is it when you are bored, stressed, tired? Being more aware of when you are likely to overspend might help you to pause before paying next time. You can also use your journal to note down any worries about money and list out solutions to help.
Stay connected and seek support, talk about your worries with trusted friends, family, or financial advisors to reduce isolation.
