The summer holidays can bring a mix of excitement and challenges for parent carers. Keeping children entertained, active, and engaged for six weeks can feel overwhelming, especially when you're balancing care responsibilities, appointments, and your own wellbeing.

Many activities are designed for families to enjoy together, making them a great option if you'd prefer not to leave your child at a holiday club.

Check your local library, including Sutton Central, Cheam, Wallington, and Worcester Park, for free events throughout the summer here.

Get Outdoors at Sutton Ecology Centre - For children who love nature, the Sutton Ecology Centre in Carshalton offers holiday activities themed around wildlife, ponds, bees, bugs, and woodland adventures. Activities often include crafts, games, exploration, and hands-on learning. The Centre provides a calm outdoor environment which can be particularly beneficial for children who enjoy sensory experiences and being in nature. Remember to dress for the weather, as activities take place outdoors rain or shine.

Holiday Camps and Leisure Centres - Check with your local facilities to see if they run any sessions which might suit you and your child. Even if there are no special sessions, you could book, for example a swim early in the morning when the Centre is likely to be quieter.

Visit Sutton's Parks and Open Spaces - Sometimes the simplest activities create the best memories. Why not spend a day exploring local favourites such as:

  • Manor Park

  • Beddington Park

  • Oaks Park

  • Roundshaw Downs

  • Nonsuch Park

Pack a picnic, take a ball, enjoy a nature walk, or organise a simple scavenger hunt. Many families find outdoor spaces easier to navigate than busy indoor attractions during the summer months.

Make the Most of Museums and Heritage Sites - Sutton is home to some wonderful local heritage venues, including:

  • Honeywood Museum

  • Whitehall Historic House

  • Little Holland House

These venues frequently host family-friendly workshops and holiday activities during the summer period. Many sessions combine learning and creativity, helping children stay curious while school is out.

Don't Forget About Yourself - The summer holidays are busy, and parent Carers often focus entirely on everyone else's needs.

Remember to:

  • Accept help when it's offered

  • Use holiday clubs where appropriate

  • Arrange play dates or family support where possible

  • Schedule small breaks for yourself

  • Reach out to local support organisations if you're struggling

Looking after yourself is an important part of supporting your child.

Final Thoughts - Whether your child enjoys sports, nature, creativity, reading, or simply spending time outdoors, there are plenty of opportunities across Sutton this summer. From the Summer in Sutton programme and local libraries to ecology centre adventures and holiday clubs, there is something for every interest and ability.

Most importantly, remember that the perfect summer doesn't have to be packed with activities every day. A balance of fun, rest, routine, and family time can make the holidays enjoyable for everyone.
