Are you hoping to be out and about a bit more this summer?
Whether a staycations or a vacations, if the person you care for need disabled facilities, or perhaps has incontinence or anxiety, knowing where the closest toilets are at short notice is really important.
Most toilets will have a disabled wheelchair access toilet and baby changing facilities, but if you need a hoist etc, these are not universally available. You may also need a Radar Key.
Lav locater:
Toilet map - tap in your location and find a toilet near you. Maps are updated by the public, so you can add or remove loos, but the site doesn't distinguish disabled facilities for wheelchair access or hoist facilities etc.
Changing places toilets - Allows you to find facilities for people may be limited in their own mobility so need equipment to help them to either get on the toilet or to have their continence pad changed. There are often photos added so you know what to expect.
Note that many of the facilities listed are at leisure centres, membership clubs or colleges etc, so you may need to beg their use, but the shopping centres and train stations will hopefully have easier access.
Changing places toilets include:
Facilities will include a centrally placed toilet with space on either side for a wheelchair user, vertical grab rails and drop-down support rails supporting wheelchair transfers.
Rooms are larger allowing turning space with non-=slip floors.
Wheelchair accessible basins, sometimes height adjustable. The space may also have a shower
Height adjustable adult sized changing bench and ceiling track hoist.
Radar Key - Most disabled toilets require access by a member of staff, or the use of a radar key. You can order a radar key from Disability Rights UK.
Are you ready? As you know, to make your trip as relaxing as possible, planning is essential. Check the location maps in advance so you can plan where to take a break or head to if you need to in an emergency.
