Black History Month: Recognising the diverse voices and contributions of unpaid Carers in Sutton
Updated: 47 minutes ago

October marks Black History Month, a time to celebrate the achievements, contributions and experiences of Black communities across the UK. At Sutton Carers Centre, it is also an opportunity to recognise the invaluable role that Black unpaid Carers play in supporting family members, friends and neighbours every day.
The theme “Honouring Our Communities” is perfect for
shining a light on the people who strengthen and support
our communities every day. Unpaid Carers are at the heart of our communities, providing practical, emotional and personal support to loved ones who are ill, disabled, experiencing mental health challenges, or who need additional help as they age.
Black History Month encourages us to reflect on the diversity that strengthens Sutton's caring community. Carers come from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, each bringing unique experiences, traditions and perspectives to their caring role. For many, caring is deeply rooted in values of family, community and mutual support, and these strengths enrich communities across the borough.
However, we also recognise that Carers from Black and other ethnically diverse communities can face additional challenges. These may include barriers to accessing information and support, concerns about stigma, or difficulties navigating health and social care services. Ensuring that all Carers feel seen, heard and understood is essential in creating services that are accessible and inclusive for everyone.
At Sutton Carers Centre, we are committed to supporting Carers from all backgrounds. We strive to provide a welcoming environment where Carers can access information, advice, emotional support and opportunities to connect with others who understand the realities of caring.
This Black History Month, we're celebrating the history, culture, achievements and resilience of Black communities while reflecting on the importance of inclusion, equity and wellbeing for all.
If you are an unpaid Carer, or know someone who is, Sutton Carers Centre is here to help. Together, we can ensure that every carer receives the recognition, support and appreciation they deserve.
Happy Black History Month from everyone at Sutton Carers Centre. 🖤💛❤️
