Winter challenges

Updated: 15 hours ago

Winter brings extra challenges for both Carers and those they support.

From increased health risks to isolation and higher heating costs, it's important to be prepared.

Here are practical tips and resources to help you navigate the cold season safely and confidently.

Keep Indoor Spaces Comfortable
  • Maintain warmth: Aim to keep living areas at a minimum of 18 °C (64 °F). Draft excluders, thick curtains, and even radiator reflectors can make a big difference.

  • Stay informed: The Gov.uk guide Keeping warm and well: staying safe in cold weather is a helpful source for tips like room temperature targets and draught prevention.

Support Physical and Mental Wellbeing
  • Layer clothing & use warm bedding: Thin layers may help trap heat more effectively than one bulky layer. Electric blankets and hot water bottles also help. You may also find your body warms up by keeping certain parts of your body warm, e.g. your feet, hands and head.

  • Stay active indoors: Gentle movement boosts circulation and mood. Utilise the space and capability you have.

  • Prevent winter blues: Low daylight can affect mental health. If you can, spend time outdoors, stay connected, and practice self-care. If you can't get out, make sure you take advantage of a sunny window or a bright room.

Fall Prevention & Safety
  • Manage hazards: Utilise local salt bins to grit icy walkways. You can find details of gritting and salt bin locations here. Keep indoor floors dry and clutter-free, and provide sturdy non-slip shoes with ice grips.

  • Use mobility aids properly: Check that canes, walkers, and wheelchairs are in good condition.

Infection Control & Health
  • Seasonal jabs: Flu vaccines are free for Carers, older adults, and those with long-term conditions. COVID‑19 boosters are also vital. You should have heard from your GP, but you can also find out more here.

  • Hand hygiene: Keep surfaces clean and wash hands frequently to prevent winter illnesses.

Nutrition & Hydration
  • Enjoy warm, nutritious meals: Soups, stews, and seasonal vegetables help boost immunity and keep you warm.

  • Stay hydrated: Warm drinks are just as important as cold, especially in heated homes that feel dry.

Emergency Planning & Connectivity
  • Have a winter plan: Keep essential numbers (GP, pharmacy, crisis line) easily accessible in case of power cuts or illness.

  • Stay connected: Ensure you make or receive regular check-ins, even by phone or text, to help combat isolation during snow or severe weather.

Caring for Yourself

Don't overlook your own wellbeing:

  • Take breaks, delegate tasks to friends or family if possible.

  • Get in touch with us or other community groups or charities which may offer check-ins, wellbeing sessions, or respite.
