A Fond Farewell to Benhill House – Celebrating the Past, Embracing the Future
❤️🩹 Yesterday, we gathered with Carers, staff, volunteers, partners, and supporters to say a heartfelt goodbye to our long-time home, Benhill House. Since 1994, it has been more than just a building — it’s been a place of connection, comfort, and unwavering support for thousands of Carers across Sutton.
The farewell was filled with warmth, stories, and reflection on how far we’ve come. From a small initiative to a vital community hub, Sutton Carers Centre has grown thanks to the people who shaped it. As we move into a new, larger space, we carry forward the spirit of Benhill and our commitment to Carers of all ages.
One particularly poignant moment came from Councillor Marian James, who spoke movingly about her unique connection to the Centre. As the original Centre Manager and first staff member, Marian helped lay the foundations of what Sutton Carers Centre would become. Now, many years later, as a Councillor within the Sutton community, she continues to champion the needs of Carers.
In her speech, Marian reflected on the early days when Carers were often overlooked, their needs barely recognised within the health and social care system. At the time, Carers had little visibility, few rights, and even fewer services available to them. It was a far cry from where we are today.
Now, nearly 30 years later, thanks to the tireless efforts of many, the role and value of Carers is increasingly acknowledged — though we know there is still more work to be done. As we prepare to move into a larger, more accessible space, we carry with us not only memories of Benhill House but the renewed energy and drive to support Carers even more effectively.
📈 While we’ve come a long way, the demand for our services continues to grow.
The number of unpaid Carers in Sutton — and across the UK — is increasing, and their needs are becoming more complex. From mental health support to help navigating education, employment, and social care systems, Carers are facing ever-greater challenges.
And that’s why our move is not just about a new building — it’s about embracing a new chapter. One where we can expand our services, reach more Carers, and continue to be a place where every Carer feels seen, heard, and valued.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has been part of our journey so far. To those who have supported us, partnered with us, volunteered, worked, and cared alongside us — thank you.
We look forward to welcoming you into our new space very soon.
