World Mental Health Day 2026: Real Voices, Real Change for Carers

October 10th is World Mental Health Day, and this year’s theme,“Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change,” highlights the importance of listening to people whose experiences can help shape better support, services and understanding. The campaign calls for people with lived experience to be heard and meaningfully involved in decisions that affect their lives.

At Sutton Carers Centre, we know that unpaid Carers have a wealth of lived experience, dealing with their own mental health and caring for those who struggle with their mental health.

The Mental Health Impact of Caring

Caring can be rewarding, but it can also be demanding, isolating and emotionally exhausting. It is common for Carers to experience stress, anxiety, low mood, loneliness or burnout, particularly when caring responsibilities increase or when support is difficult to access. Yet many Carers tell us they put their own wellbeing last, focusing instead on the needs of the person they care for.

This World Mental Health Day, we want to recognise the emotional impact of caring and remind Carers that their wellbeing matters too.

Why Carers' Voices Need to Be Heard

The 2026 theme recognises that people with lived experience are experts in their own lives and should help shape policies, services and support systems.

For unpaid Carers, lived experience means understanding first-hand:

  • The realities of navigating health and social care services

  • The challenges of balancing caring with employment and family life

  • The emotional impact of caring responsibilities

  • What practical support makes the biggest difference

  • Where gaps in support still exist

When Carers share their experiences, they help organisations, local authorities and healthcare providers better understand what is working and what needs to change.

Looking After Your Own Mental Health

If you are an unpaid Carer, taking care of your own mental health is not a luxury, it is essential.

Small steps can make a difference:

  • Taking regular breaks from caring where possible

  • Staying connected with friends, family and other Carers

  • Attending activities and support groups

  • Being physically active

  • Asking for help when you need it

  • Talking openly about how you are feeling

Remember: looking after yourself helps you continue caring for others.

We Are Here for You

This World Mental Health Day, we encourage all Carers in Sutton to remember that your experiences matter, your voice matters, and your wellbeing matters.

By listening to the real experiences of unpaid Carers, we can work towards real change, improving support, reducing isolation and helping ensure that Carers are recognised, valued and heard.

If you are looking after someone and would like support, information or a listening ear, please contact Sutton Carers Centre. Y ou do not have to face caring alone.

Together, let's ensure that Carers' voices are heard and that those voices help shape a better future for all.
